After joining Metallica in 1982, he brought classical training and a fearless, melodic approach to the low end — wah-driven bass lines, harmonized solos, and compositional instincts that shaped Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, including "Orion" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls." His life was cut short in 1986 while the band was touring Europe, but his influence on heavy metal bass playing, and on Metallica's sound, has never faded.
