Originally released in October 1993 on Peaceville Records, Turn Loose the Swans is My Dying Bride's second studio album and a radical departure from their debut — slower, longer, and suffused with Martin Powell's fully integrated violin playing alongside Aaron Stainthorpe's shifting between death growls, spoken word, and plaintive clean vocals. The first and final tracks ("Sear Me MCMXCIII" and "Black God") dispense with guitars, bass, and drums entirely, bookending the album in stark, mournful minimalism. A landmark of the Peaceville Three era and one of the defining records of death-doom.
