Produced by Robert Schneider at Pet Sounds Studio in Denver and Kindercore Studio in Athens, GA, the album draws on Jeff Mangum's response to reading The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, weaving surrealist imagery, acoustic guitars, horns, and singing saw into a dense, emotionally overwhelming whole. Named the best album of the 1990s by Magnet Magazine.
